Platoon-actuated variable area mainstream traffic control for bottleneck decongestion

In this paper a platoon-actuated mainstream traffic control is proposed to decongest bottlenecks due recurrent and nonrecurrent events. Indeed, differently from traditional strategies, i.e., strategies applied with fixed actuators, can be at any location on the freeway. work, actions communicated platoons, speed configuration, are defined by means of predictive law based platoon state detected in an area identified immediately upstream bottleneck. The main peculiarity scheme that size controlled dynamically adjusted predicted congestion This approach keeps computation burden low, while not sacrificing much performance. Specifically, number platoons time which begin depend area. Simulation results reported show effectiveness scheme, eliminating 60% 80% delay incurred compared uncontrolled case, depending level traffic.
